It’s hoped a new High Performance Surfing Centre will cement Australia’s dominance in the sport globally.
A multi million dollar training centre for the next generation of professional surfers is now open on the Tweed coast.
The High Performance Centre at Casuarina Beach features a gymnasium, auditorium, accommodation and a quiver of boards from the world’s best shapers.
Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark says the centre is designed to maintain the nation’s dominance in the sport internationally.
“It is really the equivalent of the AIS and the AIS was certainly built many years ago to achieve gold medals in the Olympics,” he said.
“This centre is about it being pro-active in terms of building a facility that can give us a really strong competitive advantage on the world stage.
“Brazil, America, some of the European nations are really catching up.
“We believe creating a facility like this is going to make a difference.”
