UberX to Launch in the Northern Rivers

The ride-sharing service uberX is set to be launched in Byron Bay, Lismore and Ballina next week.

A spokesman said from 12pm on Thursday, 27 October, local residents and visitors would be able to download the uber app and begin using the service.

The ride-sharing service is also on the lookout for new drivers.

Spokesman Caspar Nixon said local residents had been calling for uberX for some time.

‘With the local area historically underserved by traditional forms of transport, and the local population swelling with hundreds and thousands of visitors during the summer months, ridesharing will help alleviate pressure on the existing transport network and offer a more affordable and reliable way to get around the local area,’ he said.

‘We believe that ridesharing will be a positive for residents and the local economy, and will contribute to making the Byron Bay area a more livable, economically vibrant and better connected place to be.’

Mr Nixon said with unemployment at 8.41%, ride-sharing would provide many people with an alternative source of income.

‘We have also seen across many regional communities that having access to safe, reliable and affordable transport lowers the incidence of drink driving and alcohol related incidents – issues that are particularly felt in communities in the Byron Bay region,’ he said.

The launch of Uber is not expected to go down well with local taxi operators.
