Small Business Focus for Northern Rivers

Helping Northern Rivers’ small businesses to grow and succeed will be a hot topic this
week when the NSW Small Business Commissioner, Robyn Hobbs, meets with local small
business operators, key business groups and local councils in the Lismore, Mullumbimby
and Murwillumbah areas on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th August.

The focus of Ms Hobbs’ visit will be discussions around creating opportunities and achieving
positive results for small businesses in the Northern Rivers region by engaging with local

“Supporting regional small businesses is a key focus for the Office of the NSW Small
Business Commissioner, and this includes the estimated 25,000 small business operators
in the Northern Rivers region,” Ms Hobbs said.

“Our Small Biz Connect program and Small Biz Bus mobile services are already well-
engaged by local small businesses operators – over the last financial year, almost 2,500
hours of face-to-face personalised business advice and support and 17 bus visits were
provided to the Northern Rivers region by the NORTEC Small Business Support Unit.

“We are always looking at new and innovative ways to offer even more support to small
business operators and have seen great results in other regional areas through community
activation, which I am looking forward to exploring in the Northern Rivers area.”

The Northern Rivers boasts a significant and enterprising small business community, with
Small Biz Connect advisors reporting more than half (55%) of all clients who seek
assistance are intending to start a business and 22% are in the start-up phase.

Most often advisors will see clients from retail trade, services, and arts and recreation
industries who are looking for advice and support on a range of small business issues
including strategic planning, market research and seeking grants.

The Small Biz Bus will next be in the Northern Rivers region at Iluka on Friday 29 August,
Ballina on Monday 1 September, Wooli on Tuesday 2 September and Evans Head on
Wednesday 3 September.
