Byron Shire Council has acknowledged a second bypass will need to be built at Byron Bay even after its proposed Butler Street upgrade is complete.
The council has today announced the Butler Street bypass route is on public exhibition and available for viewing at its Mullumbimby headquarters, at the Byron Bay library and online at: www.byron.nsw.gov.au .
Infrastructure services director Phil Holloway said the “mini bypass” was expected to cut CBD traffic by 20%.
However, he conceded a second bypass would still have to be built “further along Ewingsdale Road”.
“With one road in and one road out, the existing road network has reached its capacity and the Byron Bay Butler Street Bypass is part of the solution to help ease the pressure,” Mr Holloway was quoted saying in a statement.
“The proposed new bypass will divert up to 20 percent of traffic flowing through the town centre. Whilst only part of the solution, it will mean a significant difference for residents who just want to travel past town to reach either Suffolk Park or the Industrial Estate.
“In the longer term an additional stage two bypass option further along Ewingsdale Road will need be explored, plus Park and Ride, a stronger pedestrian prioritisation of the town centre via the Byron Bay Masterplan and two lanes in on Shirley Street.”
The proposal for the mini-bypass includes:
• Upgrading the roundabout at the junction of Shirley, Lawson, and Butler streets.
• Upgrading the southern 600m of Butler Street, extending the street a further 600m and building a new roundabout at Somerset Street.
• Building a new level rail crossing between the Butler Street extension and the Browning Street extension.
• A new roundabout near Mitre 10 on Jonson St.
Once submissions close on August 17, they will be assessed by council staff, along with the development application itself. The proposal will then be sent to the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel, which will decide whether to approve the proposal.
