Rex Pushes for Boost in Airport Funding

Regional Express Airlines (REX) wants State and Federal Governments to boost funding for regional airports as part of a review of the aviation industry.

The Federal Government plans to release a green paper on the industry’s future in September after receiving hundreds of submissions on an aviation issues paper.

REX spokesperson Warwick Lodge says many regional airports do not generate enough revenue to fund key infrastructure upgrades such as to terminals and runways.

“We’re looking at something that can bring some sort of regulation and federal government oversight to regional airports,” he said.

“There’s an awful lot of money that’s spent on infrastructure such as roads and bridges and buildings that come through both the State and Federal budgets and not a cent gets allocated to the airport.”
