Mayor airs highway toll concerns

Ballina Mayor Philip Silver says he is worried the stretch of the Pacific Highway between Woolgoolga and Ballina in northern New South Wales could be subject to a private commercial tollway.
Councillor Silver raised his concerns at yesterday’s NSW Rural and Regional Task Force meeting at Grafton.
He says the possibility of a tollway needs to be ruled out at both the state and Federal Government level.
“The most recent funding allocation by the Federal Government indicates that there’s somewhat of a black hole emerging between Woolgoolga and Ballina, that concerns me, not from a Ballina point of view but from a Pacific Highway point of view,” he said.
“That could just be the thin edge of a wedge in terms of a private commercial tollway which would be clearly unacceptable.”
