Lismore’s Cathy Joyce Mooney has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community. She started the World’s Greatest Shave for a Cure, with the first coordinated mass shave in Lismore in 1998, to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation of NSW.

In 1999, the event was taken nationwide and was adopted by the foundation as its national signature fundraising event and has, to date, raised more than $55 million.

The original event was to support Mrs Mooneys father, she commented “My father’s doctor at the time was really blown away by the fact that Lismore and surrounding district had raised $80,000 at that first head shave and he simply said, ‘we’ve got to take it nationally’.”
