Repairs to Lighthouse Road to Start
Media Release issued by Byron Shire Council:
Repairs to Lighthouse Road are set to commence with the construction tender awarded to Civilteam Engineering yesterday. The decision to award the tender was made at Byron Shire Council’s ordinary meeting held yesterday.
Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham said the welcomed news would see construction start as early as March 2011. The long awaited project can now commence with design and environmental requirements approved, and the funding secured from the state government,” Mayor Barham said. The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) formally advised Council on 2 February 2011 of the funding approval.
The Lighthouse Road repair works include the construction of a reinforced soil slope, reconstruction of elevated boardwalk and site re-vegetation and restoration.
The work which impacts Cape Byron State Conservation Area has been approved by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service following Council’s environmental assessment plan.
Council’s executive manager community infrastructure Phil Holloway said at a cost $2.9 million (inc. gst), the awarded tender was significantly under the previous 2008 tender submission.
This is the second time Council has gone out to tender for the Lighthouse Road Slope Stabilisation works. In early 2008 only one tender was submitted for the reconstruction work. Regrettably due to the high cost, the tender was not accepted as additional funding was not available from the RTA.
Mr Holloway said as a consequence an extensive geotechnical design review was completed.“Our aim with the redesign was to reduce the construction cost and encourage a greater number of tenders. Both were achieved.mm“It’s now onto the construction phase which we are anticipating will take six months weather permitting,” he said.
Byron Shire Council is providing an additional $200,000 for essential stormwater drainage improvement works. Funding for the additional drainage works was not eligible under the Natural Disaster funding guidelines.
Lighthouse Road will remain open to single lane traffic throughout the works and roadwork delays are to be expected. Pedestrian detours will also be in place to ensure a safe passage around the work site. Council apologises for any inconvenience residents, the community and visitors may experience during the Lighthouse Road construction works.Public enquiries on the Lighthouse Road Slope Stabilisation works can phone 6626 7101.
The Lighthouse Road works are a result of a major landslip on 30 June 2005 which saw the road and walkway collapse.
