Push to Return Splendour to Northern Rivers
Northern Rivers Tourism says the region cannot afford to shun major music festivals.
Splendour in the Grass was held at Woodford in south-east Queensland last month.
Its return to the New South Wales far north coast depends on the approval of the North Byron Parklands festival site at Wooyung.
Tourism spokesman Russell Mills says estimates that the event generates $20 million in spending are conservative.
“Probably more, there is a multiplier effect that estimates that the event, when factoring all the other peripheral benefits and services that are required to put an event like that on, that it’s worth up to $192 million,” he said.
“These are the sort of event-tourism drawcards that the state must really leverage if we’re going to really combat what’s happening with the high Australian dollar, which causes Australians to think about travelling overseas rather than at home and also acts as a deterrent to international visitors to visit these shores.”
