Editor's Note, Summer 2009

Welcome to your Summer issue of NRBM. So much has happened since our last issue. Our storm season has certainly kicked off with a couple of big ones creating havoc up and down the coast and inland. Advice from Country Energy is to switch off electronic equipment as soon as you hear one coming, so power surges or lightening strikes don’t overload your computers and fax machines.
I think everyone I know was watching the election in the USA, in November. The history books are being rewritten daily and it will be interesting to see what will happen in the years to come, certainly not an easy ride for President Obama.

The global economic crisis has deepened, although the message from the experts seems to be to stay positive and focussed and to stick to your original plan. The actions of the RBA are finally giving homeowners a much needed break. In Business Matters this issue we answer some of your questions about your investments and bring some clarity to the situation.

Our feature this issue is on Tweed Shire which in spite of looming recession is experiencing solid growth in their local economy. With a great location, positive business attitude and years of planning the infrastructure for growth, Tweed Shire is now reaping the rewards. Forecasted to be one of the biggest population growths in Australia over the next 10 years the TEDC has been working diligently to attract business that will provide employment for the highly skilled population.

This issue we launch Green Business, a new section where we showcase ‘green’ initiatives and companies that are tackling the issue of sustainability for businesses. With Carbon Tax on the political agenda, find out how being environmentally aware can save you money, build your business and help save the planet for future generations.

Summer is traditionally the peak period for our retail, hospitality and tourism sectors and there are some great initiatives being used by local towns to keep revenue flowing into their local economies. See Chamber Round Up for more details.

Finally I’d like to wish a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all our NRBM advertisers, suppliers and readers.
